Talented Independent Managers
The key to a successful investment strategy comes down to one word: Talent. While that may seem obvious and oversimplified, most investors don't have truly talented managers running their portfolios. This is demonstrated by the large amount of capital allocated to index funds, Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's), and mediocre mutual funds. These investors subscribe to the thoughts that most active managers cannot outperform market indexes or that all mutual funds are the same. This kind of thinking overlooks the most important point: There are a number of talented managers that have consistently outperform market indexes, some by wide margins. Unlike index funds and ETF's these managers have the skill to employ capital preservation strategies during difficult markets. Investments
Based on your investment objectives, size of accounts, and tax sensitivity CIM may employ mutual funds, separate stock and bond accounts, or more advanced private investment strategies such as real estate or hedge funds.
Global Diversification
Proper diversification is essential to a long-term investment strategy. Trying to pick the best performing investment or category each year and placing all of your money there, while being very rewarding if you are right, could be devastating if you are wrong. At CIM we will generally allocate accounts among stock or equity managers in the following categories: Large-Cap Value, Large-Cap Growth, Small-Cap, International, and Emerging Markets. Our Bond or Fixed-Income managers will make investments in short, intermediate, and long-term high quality government and corporate bonds. We also employ managers who specialize in lower quality (junk) bonds, convertible bonds, emerging markets, and international bonds.
